Learn/ The Origin Intervention/ 7-19 October 2008

General Information

Meaning many things to many people, the word craft evokes all kinds of received ideas. Unsurprisingly, this complexity makes it a lively and often controversial subject for debate.

The works presented in The Origin Intervention have been selected for the way they engage us in the contemporary craft debate, provoking the viewer to question their personal notion of craft through the exploration of process and material.

Freed from the constraints of creating a craft-product, these artists do not abandon the notion of tradition, but sharply expand it. Everyday and available materials such as paper sit alongside ceramics – here combined with industrial detritus, or presented in stop-frame animation to reveal the instability of the discipline – as well as simple forms constructed from something more surprising: preserved sheep-stomachs.

Co-curated by Crafts Council and Somerset House, The Origin Intervention aims to encourage us to question what constitutes a craft sensibility, and to identify the presence of a craft element within creative practice and visual culture.
